[EAT_TRADITIONAL] 11.Gejang_Marinated Crab_게장

 Blogger:Jutako

  Restaurant name

  순미네 행복게장
 Sunmi's Happy Marinated Crab

How do you eat "crab" in your country? In Korea we mianly have two different types of crab dishes; crab spicy soup, and marinated crab. Today, I would like to take you to marinated crab restaurant! It's a bit too traditional dish, so it could be a bit "new taste" to some of you. However, I know few of my foreigner friends love this so much :)
There are two different types of Gejang (Marinated Crab_게장); Ganjang gejang(Soy Sauce Marinated Crab_간장게장)  and Yangnyeom gejang(Spicy Marinated Crab_양념게장)

Left:Spicy / Right:Soy sauce

How to make it? It's easy. Soy sauce one is just marinated with soy sauc and few more ingredients, while spicy one is marinated with red pepper powder, garlic and few more ingredients. My favorite is ganjang gejang(soy sauce marinated crab)!

Let's go to check the restaurant now!

All you can eat / 15,900 KRW per person

Sunmi's Happy Marinated Crab

There are few branches in Korea. Last time I visited one in gangnam area, and it was really nice! Today I went to the one nearby in Dongdaemun(DDM). I thought the food and service should be exactly the same. Actually it was a bit different. Gangnam branch has a bit bigger size of crab and more side dishes. But! soy sauce shrimp can be refilled only in dondaemun branch! Big advantage!

Inside is quite big and new!

NOTE: Please finish crab legs too, before asking to refill.

People don't like to finish up crab leg part, becuase it's a bit unconvenient to eat. However, this place is a all-you-can-eat restaurant. Therefore, the restaurant strictly ask to finish up all food before asking to refill. Please keep that in your mind!

Get your apron first!

Let's go get side dishes from bar.

UM.... I have no idea what it is...

Spicy chicken stew

Seaweed soup

Few vegetables

You can just order few dishes, such as 20 crabs, 10 shrimps, etc. It's upto you, but I would like to recommend you to order all-you-can-eat! One of the best things of this restaurant is reasonable price. If you just want to try nice few bites, then you don't have to come to this place. There are a lot of nice gejang restaurant, but... very expensive! You can eat gejang as much as you can in very reasonable price in here!

Let's go check what is served!

 Jutako's order :  All-you-can-eat  for 4 people
+ 4 bowls of rice for 4 people

Flying Fish Roe, dried seaweed, and vegetable

Mixed rice in crab shell + egg

Ganjang gejang(soy sauce marinated crab)

Soy sauce marinated shrimp!

Yangnyeom gejang(spicy marinated crab)

The soy sauce marinated shrimp is SUPER good! Two thumbs up! It is personally one of my favorite dishes, but I found that all of my friends also love it better than crab! I hope you like it too. Don't forget to try it! You can refill shrimp as well in dongdaemun branch.

You will be given with plastic gloves!

Please make sure to wear the gloves! Otherwise your hands will be marinated with sauce! Of course with strong smell! :) Also, use your hands, when you eat crab. It's common to use your hands when you eat this type of food in Korea. When you need to refill, just waive your hand or call someone and ask to refill! As mush as you want~

Finished all!

Trashed in little bin on your table

Some people really like this dish, while some don't like it at all. If you like it, you will love it, just like me! I hope you can at least try it for your experience. On top of dish, there is Makgeolli(rice wine) in bar! You can enjoy some Korean traditional alcohol too :)

[EAT_TRADITIONAL] 10.Budaejjigae(Johnsontang) _Spicy Sausage Stew_부대찌개(존슨탕)

Blogger:Jutako

  Restaurant name

  바다 식당
 Bada sikdang

Welcome back guys! Let's have a traditional Korean meal today! What we are going to eat today is one of the Korean traditional dishes, Budae Jjigae (Spicy Sausage Stew_부대찌개).

What is Budae Jjigae? I can explain it better by telling you when the Budae Jjigae's history started in Korea. During Korean war, American army base was located in Yongsan. People, who were living nearby the old American army base, could easily get sausage and ham and started cook with sausage and ham but taste was so oily to Korean poeple. (You know Korean people love spicy food! :) So, People started cook them with red pepper paste and Kimchi together. Eventually it became Budae Jjigae! It is quite historically meaningful dish, isn't it? :)

Let's go to check the restaurant now!

Old house

Welcome in!

Main sign

I guess the restaurant building is remodeled from residential house. Without the main sign, you can hardly recognize the restaurant. It just looks like one of the residential houses. So remember the sign! :) The restaurante is divided into two buildings. Both of them are right next to each other. You don't need to worry about which one you should go to. When you get enter the main building's main door, waitress(most likely old lady) will tell you where you may sit! In my case, the second building.

Enterence of the second building

After you enter the door, on your left side you will find blue big pockets as the below photo.
Quiz! what's for? :)

It's is for putting your shoes, so that you can carry them into the restaurant. I guess maybe many poeple got stolen their shoes in here... It is better to be careful, right? Let's take our shoes with us!

Shoes pocket

Room with dining tables

I don't know how the main building looks like, but at least the second building looks very clean and modern. Quite different from outside old looking!

Silverware were wearing the hat(cover) :)

Let's wear apron!

Do you know why we wear apron when we eat spicy food? I am not sure if other countires also do this. At least in Korea it's very common thing! Normally restaurants selling spicy red dish borrow us apron to protect our clothing from "red soup." Get one for you, otherwise you will find your clothing very messy after eating.

Let me explain you menu!
(If you click the photo, you can see the menu in bigger size.)

The most famous dish in this restaurant is Budae Jjigae(left side big photo in the menu). Johnsontang(존슨탕) is Budae Jjigae's another name. Johnson...tang(meaning soup in Korean)...? There are two stories about where the name came from.
1. The name came from one of the United States presidents, Lyndon B. Johnson. He was the president of United States when Budae Jjigae's history started in Korea! :)
2. American army's common name was John at that time. John's tang(soup) became Johnsontang.

Ready to eat!

Let's go check side dishes first!

Cucumber seasoned with vinegar and other condiments

Salted and fermented squid

fresh vegetable salad dressed with garlic and chili powder

Kimchi

A bowl of rice

By the way, you should order rice too. It's not included in Budae Jjigae.

Jutako's order : Budae Jjigae for 3 people
+ Three bowls of rice for 3 people

Let's start eating Budae Jjigae now~

It looks spicy, right? Actually it is not! The reason why I chose this restaurant for Budae Jjigae is becuase they have not so spicy Budae Jjigae! Really I bet that this is a lot less spicier than normal one. I thought it would be the just right place to introduct to you, foreign visitors.

Let me tell you what's inside!

Main ingredients are ham, sausage, pork. Also there are glass noodle, onion, green onion, garlic, red pepper powder and red pepper paste. Normally Kimchi is one of the main ingredients, but in this restaurant they don't put Kimchi in it. Instead of it, they put cabbage. That's why it's not very spicy. Cheese is optional!

Jutako's recommendation
Budae Jjigae_20,000 KRW per 2 people or 30,000 KRW per 3 people
+ 2-3 bowls of rice 2-3,000 KRW per 2-3 people
