Kalguksu

Today what we are going to eat is Kalguksu_Knife cut noodle_칼국수.
I don't think there is a perfect English word for Kalguksu. The name Kalguksu literally means "knife_Kal_" & "Noodle_Guksu_국수." Instead of making noodles with noodle machine, Kalguksu's noodles are cut from flour dough with a knife! That's why we call it "Knife cut noodle!"

There is a small back alley! (Star)

The location is a bit hidden... :) I got to know this place long time ago through my friend, and at that time I asked to my friend how she found out this place! It's a very local and hidden yummy restaurant in Jongro 3-ga, Seoul! It's a hidden, but not difficult to find it. Let me tell you where it is located.

If you get off at Jongro 3-ga subway station and use the exit NO. 4, you are already almost there! You can find the detailed direction at the end of this blog! As usual :)

Here! this alley! It's located in very small old alley.

In 10M, you will find today's restaurant.

It says this place has 50 years of history!

50 years of history? It's not so surprising, if you taste it once :) Whenever I want to eat Kalguksu, I come here with no hesitation. I wish I could visit here until when I am over 100 years old!

해물칼국수 = Seafood kalguksu

This restaurant used to ONLY sell this main dish, seafood kalguksu. Can you imagin that this place has been running their business by only selling one dish? This fact can guarantee the taste of this main dish!
However recently they started to also sell dumpling. I will show those dishes soon :)

It's in a very old house.

Few years before, it was still in very old house. However I think they remodeled  few parts of the house. I can see the doors are newly changed.

It's been in TV programs so many times!

As I said in the other posting, not all of restaurants in TV program are good. However, I can tell you this place has such a good Kalguksu! To be honest, I don't think their new menu, dumpling, is such a good though... Just Kalguksu will be my recommendation.

Let's go check the menu and price!

Menu

고기/김치만두_Meat/Kimchi Dumpling_6,000KRW

This is the main dish, Kalguksu!

Jutako's recommendation_Seafood Kalguksu
5,500 KRW per one person

Good thing about this place is that you can get FREE refill! Actaully the portion of Kalguksu is already huge! so... I never could refill it, but you can definitely ask for free refill in here. Enjoy the nice dish, as much as you want! :)

Dumpling

New menu, Dumpling! It's still okay in terms of taste. Can't compare with Kalguksu though! Some people prefer fresh one, while some people prefer aged one. I personally like aged one! I assume that if you have tried Kimchi in somewhere in the world, it's probably the aged one. It's proved by my small research with my foreign friends :) Please try both of them, and see what is your favorite! Next to the door, there is a section that we can bring your own kimchi. So help yourself, but please do not take more than you can finish. It's one of the etiquette!

There are two different types of Kimchi!

Newly made fresh one!

Aged old one!

Some people prefer fresh one, while some people prefer aged one. I personally like agend one! I assume that if you have tried Kimchi in somewhere in the world, it's probably the aged one. It's proved by my small reaearch with my foreign friends:) Please try both of them, and see which type is your favorite! Next to the door, there is a section that you can bring your Kimchi. So hep yourself, but please do not take more than you can finish. It's one of the etiquette!

There is a water purifier as well. It's all self-service. You should go get your own water. Don't wait until water get serviced for you! Then... you won't get water ever haha :)

Here's a quiz for you! What do you think this is for?

Let me tell you what it's for. It's for seashell out. After you order your dish, you should bring one of the bowls from the section. And then, before you start eating your Kalguksu, you'd better take out all of seashell into the bowl, so that you can conveniently eat the noddle and clam meat together. Don't get feel lost, when you see this bowl in the restaurant~

Can you see the bowls here?

These small plates are for Kimchi.

Aged kimchi Vs fresh kimchi

Get your Kimchi from here!

In few tables in this restaurant, Kimchi and a bowl are already set. It's depending on where you sit I think. If you get the seat with full setting, you don't need to go get everything. Just take your own water in that case. Good luck to you :)

This place is one of my favorite restaurants. I have been coming here for Kalguksu for about 5 years. It always don't let me down. Price is very "kind" and the taste is very originally good! Please, come and try Korean Kalguksu_Knife cut noodle!
